Care of your Moss Filled Topiary

Care

When the planting is completed take your newly planted topiary to a location where you can water over generously. I always like to water just after planting to help settle in the new plants.

When the topiary is first planted water over with a gentle spray every couple of days for two weeks. It is important to water enough to soak in and keep the moss damp but not so much that the newly planted topiary is soggy. Too much water will cause the unrooted cuttings to rot. After the succulent plants are established you can cut back on watering.

Newly planted topiary should be kept in light shade.

Long Term Maintenance

How often you water your new succulent creation depends on the size and shape of the topiary, your location and climate, where you have it located, and the time of year. My basic instruction is to keep the topiary moist but not soggy. The surface of the moss may feel dry to the touch but the interior is still moist. To check this lift up the topiary and if it is light it is dry. If it is too dry, you may need to soak it in a tub of water. This may take as much as an hour.

In especially humid climates, watering too much may cause some succulents to grow faster and stretch so holding back a little may reduce the amount of maintenance. Good air circulation is very important in humid conditions.

Fertilization

Succulents require little or no fertilizer. However, if you have had your topiary over a year you might want to give it a light fertilization with diluted liquid fertilizer.

Pruning and Maintaining Shape

Monitor your topiary regularly. If you see a plant stretching out from the form and causing your topiary to loose shape clip off that plant as close to the topiary form as possible. Trim the length of the stem, make a new hole in the moss and pin it back to the moss to fill in the vacant spot. If you do this regularly maintenance will be simplified.

Sometimes your topiary many only need minor repairs by adding fresh cuttings where needed.

If your topiary has become over-grown and no longer recognizable it is time for a major repair. Cut off all the stretched plants, soak the form in a tub of water, and remove as many of the old pins as possible. Now your moss form can be replanted by following the original planting instructions.

Growing Location for Your Topiary

Where you grow your topiary depends on your climate and your minimum and maximum temperatures. These factors can vary from state to state, town to town and even your local microclimates.

If you live in a Zone that has freezing winter temperature or extreme summer heat you need to move your topiary into a protected location according to the these factors. In general, your succulent topiary is happiest when the climate is moderate and does not freeze or have extreme heat.

Check your Growning Zone

Do not leave your topiary outdoors if the temperature is going down below freezing. Likewise, do not leave your succulent topiary out in extreme heat. Even in some climates that get moderate heat in the summer your topiary may need some shade. The ideal temperature range for succulents is 50 to 75 degrees.
